Just a question.
On modded xboxes, is the whole box banned or only the dvd drive?
So for instance, if i swap the drive of a banned xbox with a new one
will the xbox still be banned?

yes,the console will still be banned.the console id is wht gets banned and its stored i believe on the nand.

Yep thats correct they can the console id which is stored in the key vault to unban a console swapping key vaults can do the job yet thats pretty pointless because 1) you need an exploitable console, if you got banned from live in the last wave this is not the case and 2) you would only be able to use 1 console simultaneous online...

If you get an Infectious Chip, you can unban your console. Or you can get a different console and recover your Xbox Live account. Just remember that M$ already knows that you had a hacked console, so it may not be a great idea to mod your Xbox Live console again. They only ban your Xbox's Serial Number, so a new console is probably the easiest fix. Sell your's on Craig's List and then go buy a different one. There are plenty of people that will buy a banned console because they know that they can unban it.
